The Alternative Comedy Memorial Society (ACMS) is an evening of experimental comedy, held monthly at The Soho Theatre. The concept was first conceived by comedians John-Luke Roberts (BBC Talent Finalist) and Thom Tuck (presenter of BBC Radio 4′s Sketchorama) who realised they were both in need of a comedy night that could be reliably alternative. The duo describe the show as ‘Fresh Sisyphean Comedy’* symbolising the effort in attempt to create something brilliant. At the end of each act, the two will cry: ‘A failure?’ And the crowd will reply: ‘A noble failure!’ signifying that even if the act did not impress, more is learned from failure than from success. Audience participation is encouraged, but only in the form of ‘permitted heckles’ (see website for details – brownie points if executed with impeccable comic timing.)

Designed for comedians to trial novel material, straight stand-up is seldom seen and proceedings can easily escalate into haphazard hilarity. Previous examples include an alcohol-fuelled bleep test, on-stage pancake making and a talcum-powder roller-disco; but within the theatre’s dimly-lit basement bar is a supportive atmosphere that allows comedians the freedom to do things they’ve never done before, and may never do again. Tickets are reasonable (around £12.50 each.) Sign up to their newsletter and you can get exclusive discount codes.
